Machine Learning (ML)

What is Machine Learning (MI)

Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can teach themselves to grow and change when exposed to new data.

"A computer program is said to learn from experience E with respect to some class of tasks T and performance measure P, if its performance at tasks in T, as measured by P, improves with experience E."

Machine Learning is similar to "Data Mining" . But  it is different. Both systems search through data to look for patterns.

In data mining - It extracts data for human comprehension .
But machine learning uses that data to detect patterns in data and adjust program actions accordingly.

Machine learning algorithms are often categorized as being supervised or unsupervised. Supervised algorithms can apply what has been learned in the past to new data. Unsupervised algorithms can draw inferences from data sets.

How is machine learning used today?

Ever wonder how an online retailer provides nearly instantaneous offers for other products that may interest you? Or how Facebook's News Feed uses machine learning to personalize each member's news feed? Many of our day-to-day activities are powered by machine learning algorithms, including:
  • Fraud detection.
  • Web search results.
  • Real-time ads on web pages and mobile devices.
  • Text-based sentiment analysis.
  • Credit scoring and next-best offers.
  • Prediction of equipment failures.
  • New pricing models.
  • Network intrusion detection.
  • Pattern and image recognition.
  • Email spam filtering.
